How to recognise a true experience of Virtual Reality

Although it is best to experiment it, we are going to tell you what an experience of immersive virtual reality is. ¿Who hasn’t experienced the feeling of being transported when reading a book? In this case, our brain recreates, from the writing, a fictitious scene that we internalise as if we were living it. This is called “immersion”: being inside a story.

Do memorise this feeling because it will be very useful to rapidly identify a good experience of immersive virtual reality. Virtual reality makes the concept of teleportation more real, being in different places at the same time. With the union of specific software and hardware, experiences close to reality can be created, that even it is difficult for our brain to know if something happened or if it was fiction.

Brands can take advantage of the great potential of VR to reach consumers and create unforgettable experiences. But we have to avoid this technology to be distorted in order to take the most of it. Why? Because like a mediocre book is not able to make us travel through its pages, a mediocre VR experience will avoid to experiment a full immersion into that fictitious reality, missing the opportunity to connect with the end users.

For the VR to be fully immersive, the following is essential:

  • Getting a large dose of realism in that imaginary trip, with high quality graphics giving the sensation of being inside that scene. For that reason, the hardware and software should be able to reproduce fluently that virtual reality experience.
  • Developing with specific software and wide technical knowledge to create the scene for that experience.
  • Using the appropriate device. There are several brands involved: Sony with its Project Morpheus, Oculus Rift, and the one developed by HTC together with Valve, called Vive, coming soon.

It is important not to confuse immersive virtual reality with other types of technologies.

In the market we can find devices such as the Hololens by Microsoft for augmented virtual reality; the Gear VR by Samsung, which directly interacts on the screens of certain mobile phones or the Cardboard, a device similar to the Gear VR but lower in price. None of these devices is able to reproduce an experience of immersive virtual reality ensuring a large dose of realism.
